Technical guide · OrbOps perspective
How to choose the best FinOps agent for your cloud
The best FinOps agent depends on the cost decision you need to make: explain spend, allocate costs, investigate waste or manage commitments. Choose one that can trace its numbers to your billing sources, explain uncertainty and respect your approval process. Validate the result against your own bill before trusting a savings recommendation.
Agentic FinOps is not the same as FinOps for AI
Agentic FinOps uses agents to help analyze technology spend and prepare cost decisions. FinOps for AI concerns the economics of AI workloads, such as model usage and accelerator infrastructure. A product may support one, both or neither for your specific data sources; do not infer AI-workload coverage from a FinOps agent label.
For O2 AI, start with the described AWS and Google Cloud billing scope. Confirm any model, token or GPU cost requirements separately. Keep a cost recommendation, an approved action and a measured outcome distinct; calling the workflow agentic does not establish purchase authority or realized savings.
Separate cost intelligence from spending authority
An AI FinOps agent applies connected billing and workload context to cost analysis and recommendations. Some products answer cost questions or prepare optimization options; others can purchase commitments or change infrastructure. These are different permissions and commercial decisions. Ask which actions are available and which ones the agent is actually authorized to perform.
Start with a billing period, a set of accounts or projects, and the teams responsible for them. Identify whether your main problem is visibility, allocation, forecasting or taking an approved action. Include Kubernetes, shared services and discounts only where their data is in the agreed scope.
| Need | Evidence to request |
|---|---|
| Understand the bill | Provider billing source, refresh time, currency and reconciled totals |
| Allocate cost | Account, project, service, tag and shared-cost allocation rules |
| Investigate waste | Billing evidence plus the utilization period and workload constraints |
| Forecast spending | History window, assumptions, coverage and comparison with a later actual period |
| Manage commitments | Explicit purchase authority, utilization risk, cancellation limits and fee terms |
What to test before believing a savings figure
A recommendation is an estimate until the change occurs and its effect can be measured. A lower bill does not by itself establish causation: usage, prices, credits and workload mix may have changed. Keep opportunity estimates, forecasts and verified outcomes separate.
| Check | Passing evidence |
|---|---|
| Billing provenance | Every billed total resolves to a connected export or provider record |
| Missing data | An unavailable project or metric is marked missing rather than counted as zero |
| Cost basis | The treatment of credits, discounts, taxes, currencies and amortized commitments is explicit |
| Forecast quality | The history, assumptions, uncertainty and evaluation period are stated |
| Optimization validity | Utilization supports the proposed change and service constraints are considered |
| Approval controls | A named owner can review or reject an action before any authorized execution |
| Savings verification | A comparable baseline, workload normalization and observation window are retained |
Use a read-only billing pilot first
Connect a limited account or project scope using the read access required by the vendor. Agree a historical billing period and export an independent reference total. Ask the agent to explain the same period and inspect any reconciliation difference before extending the scope.
Next, remove a data source or select a period without utilization coverage. Check whether the agent clearly identifies the gap. Ask for a rightsizing recommendation and inspect the supporting utilization interval, workload constraints, cost estimate and proposed owner. An unconnected cloud must not silently appear as zero spend.
For forecasting, retain the original prediction and assumptions, then compare with the actual period when it closes. For savings, record the approved change, rollback conditions and the observation window. Report opportunity, approved estimate and verified outcome separately. This is a suggested pilot method; no savings result is implied.
Evaluate the O2 AI FinOps Agent against that contract
The O2 AI FinOps Agent describes a workflow over connected AWS and Google Cloud billing and utilization data. Its data contract separates measured, estimated and not-collected information. Connections begin read-only, and optimization proposals are prepared for accountable owner review.
Evaluate whether the product helps your team understand spend, assess waste, and review an optimization with its service impact visible. The product page distinguishes billed totals, forecasts and estimated scenarios. Use those distinctions as pilot questions rather than assuming every source is connected or every action is enabled.
OrbOps is in private beta. Confirm connection availability, historical data requirements and the exact operating scope for your environment. Do not assume Azure coverage, automatic commitment purchases or a guaranteed percentage reduction from the AWS and Google Cloud description.
Questions finance and engineering should answer together
Does read-only access mean the system cannot make useful recommendations? Read access can support analysis and proposed actions; executing a change or making a purchase is a separate capability and authorization decision.
Does an optimization estimate equal realized savings? No. Realized outcomes require an implemented change and a defensible comparison against the baseline, with changes in demand and billing treatment accounted for.
Which product is best overall? This guide does not assign a universal winner. It presents OrbOps' evaluation perspective. Compare candidates on your own billing scope and operational requirements, and record where each result is demonstrated, incomplete or outside scope.
